Hurricane season came early to Hilton Head in 1898. It was August when the massive storm washed over the island. 20-year-old Caroline Fripp's father had been the keeper of the lighthouse for three years. Unfortunately, this was the one that would claim their lives, he during the storm,and Caroline a week later. His last words were to Caroline to "keep the lamp lit". For over 100 years she has not broken trust with her father's dying wish. During the stormy nights of hurricane season, she is seen coming to tend the lamp, still wearing the blue dress she was last seen in. |
